Max Payne 3 (2012): São Paulo, platforms and what to know before playing

Nine years after the second game, Max is a hard-drinking bodyguard for a rich family in São Paulo. Rockstar made this one, for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC in 2012 — here is what to know before you play it.

The story

Max in São Paulo

The setup, without the twists

Max has left the NYPD and spends his days on drink and painkillers, until trouble with the local mob drives him out of New York. Raul Passos, whom he met in that mess, offers him private security work in South America, and nine years after the second game Max is guarding the wealthy Branco family in São Paulo: real-estate magnate Rodrigo, his wife Fabiana, her sister Giovanna, the politician Victor and the party-loving Marcelo.

When a street gang kidnaps Fabiana, Max is pulled into a fight that reaches far beyond one gang — the Comando Sombra, who took her, and a vigilante militia called the Crachá Preto among the rivals. Somewhere along the way he quits drinking and shaves his head. That older, bald, bearded Max drew a harsh reaction, and Rockstar answered with a look that changes over the course of the game and the classic Max in flashbacks.

Release

North American dates, PAL ones in brackets

Rockstar Studios — Rockstar’s own studios working as one team, mainly Vancouver, London, Toronto and New England — made the game, and Remedy only consulted near the end. It reached PS3 and Xbox 360 first, on May 15, 2012 (May 18), then Windows on May 29 (June 1) and OS X on June 20, 2013, running on Rockstar’s RAGE engine with Euphoria driving how the characters move.

Getting there took a while: planned for late 2009, the game slipped to 2010 and then to 2011, was left off Take-Two’s lineup for its 2011–12 year in December 2010, got a March 2012 date in September 2011 and took one last two-month delay to May.

Today

Where to play it today

Official stores, as of September 2026

On PC, as of September 2026, the version on Steam and the Rockstar Store includes all the downloadable content — Rockstar made every pack free on PC in April 2021. You need a Rockstar Games account to activate it (it can be linked to Steam), and the store lists Windows 10 as the minimum. On Steam Deck, Valve rates it Playable: the launcher may need the touchscreen or on-screen keyboard, and the native resolution has to be set by hand.

On Xbox, as of September 2026, the store lists it for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S; the game has been backward compatible there since November 15, 2021. On PlayStation it remains a PS3 game: Wikipedia’s list of its platforms, checked in September 2026, has no PS4 or PS5 version, and no remaster has been announced.

Rating

Rated M for Mature

The ESRB descriptors and what they refer to

The ESRB rates Max Payne 3 M (Mature 17+) on every platform it lists — PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and Mac — with six content descriptors: intense violence, blood and gore, strong language, partial nudity, strong sexual content, and the use of drugs and alcohol. Online interactions are not rated.

The ESRB summary describes a strip club with topless dancers that Max visits; one player on the Steam forums in 2021 said there is no setting to switch the nudity off, and others in the same thread named one or two chapters where it shows up. The same summary mentions cutscenes of Max drinking heavily and a couple of scenes where characters snort cocaine.

Gameplay

Linear, not open world

How it plays, in short

Max Payne 3 is not an open-world game. It is a linear story fought level by level, with no loading screens between cutscenes and play, and critics counted that linear design among its weak points. New to the series are a cover system, the Last Stand — with health gone and a painkiller in your pocket, you get a moment to shoot whoever hit you last — and shootdodges you can keep firing from after you land.

Max carries three guns at most, two handguns and one two-handed weapon, and holding a pistol in each hand means dropping the big one. Health does not come back on its own; painkillers restore it.

Multiplayer

Online, then and now

Up to 16 players · console servers closed in 2021

This was the first game in the series with online multiplayer: up to 16 players in co-op or competitive modes, on maps rebuilt from the campaign, where the mode and the map can change during a match. Gang Wars plays four objective rounds that decide who has the edge in a final deathmatch, and players formed crews through Rockstar’s Social Club.

In September 2021 Rockstar switched off online play and the Social Club features of the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. As of September 2026, players on the PC version were still posting on the Steam forums in search of opponents.

Reception

Reviews and sales

Metacritic — PC 87, PS3 87, Xbox 360 86

Critics rated it highly for its direction, acting, story and soundtrack. IGN gave it 9 and singled out James McCaffrey as Max, while Edge, at 7, found it an unusually cautious game for Rockstar. In Brazil, reviewers were split on how it shows São Paulo, and most of them criticized the accents of some Brazilian characters; TechTudo’s reviewer put that down to Portuguese actors voicing the main Brazilian roles.

It shipped about 3 million copies in its first week and sold 440,000 in the US in May 2012, by NPD’s count, yet in July 2012 Take-Two said sales were below expectations; by May 2013 shipments reached 4 million. Before launch, an analyst at Sterne Agee estimated the cost at $105 million, which Wikipedia’s list of the most expensive games files as an unofficial estimate.
