Max Payne cheats: codes, unlocks and trainers

Developer-console commands for the first two games on PC, pause-menu codes on PS2, the hidden cheat menu on Xbox and what finishing each game unlocks.

Max Payne · PC

The developer console

Start the game with -developer, then press F12

Add -developer to the command line that starts the game, then press F12 in play. Type coder for invincibility and ammo in one go, or pick single commands: god and mortal switch invincibility on and off, GetAllWeapons, GetInfiniteAmmo, GetHealth, GetPainkillers and GetBulletTime do what their names say, and NoClip lets Max walk through walls until you type NoClip_off.

Max Payne 2 · PC

The same console in the sequel

-developer again; F12 or ~, depending on the list

IGN’s list opens this console with ~; a GamesRadar reader entry and a Steam forum thread use F12. coder, god, mortal, getallweapons, gethealth, getpainkillers and getbullettime all carry over, showfps and showhud turn on the frame counter and the HUD, and jump10, jump20 and jump30 set how high Max jumps.

PlayStation 2

Pause-menu codes on PS2

Max Payne, plus one code for Max Payne 2

In Max Payne on PS2, pause and enter L1, L2, R1, R2, then Triangle, Circle, X, Square for every weapon with ammo and painkillers, or L1, L2, R1, R2, then Triangle, X, X, Triangle for unlimited bullet time. For a level select, clear the first subway level, go to the main menu and enter Up, Down, Left, Right, then Up, Left, Down, Circle; the levels then open in the load menu.

Max Payne 2 on PS2 has one code in most lists: during play, enter Square, Square, Square, X, then Left, Right, Left, Right, enter all eight again, and start a new game with every mode and level open.

Xbox

The hidden cheat menu on Xbox

Max Payne on the original Xbox

In a game, press Back for the main menu (IGN’s list says to beat the game first), hold both triggers and both sticks pressed in, and press White, Black, Black, White, White, Black. A cheats option appears with All Weapons and Refill, which tops up ammo, painkillers and bullet time. A GamesRadar reader entry gives the same combination for Max Payne 2.

Unlocks

What finishing the games opens

Harder modes, a bonus level and a second ending

Besides the default Fugitive setting, Max Payne has Hard-Boiled, Dead on Arrival, limited to seven saves in each chapter, and New York Minute, with a clock on every chapter. Beat Dead on Arrival for The Last Challenge, one last gunfight against a crowd of enemies with shotguns. On Game Boy Advance, one full run opens a cheat mode; its options include Super Cop, All Weapons and infinite ammo.

One run through Max Payne 2 opens the harder settings and two modes, New York Minute and Dead Man Walking; finishing on Dead on Arrival shows a different ending.

Max Payne 3

Cheats you earn

As IGN lists them for Xbox 360

Max Payne 3 hands out its cheats as rewards: finish the story on Hard for Unlimited Painkillers and on Hardcore for One Hit Kill, collect every golden gun part for unlimited ammo and every clue for a constant bullet-time camera, and earn all gold awards in what IGN calls Score Arcade for unlimited bullet time. Hard also opens the Old School and Hardcore difficulties.

Mobile and PS4

On phones and on PS4

As of September 2026

As of September 2026, the App Store and Google Play pages of Max Payne Mobile tie its cheats to Rockstar Games Social Club (older devices get them without it, the App Store adds), and both mention a Skip to Level cheat. The first game on PS4 is the PS2 version under emulation; the PlayStation Store warns that some features may not work as on PS2.

Trainers

Trainers and mod menus

Programs from outside the games

A trainer is a third-party program that runs alongside the game and changes how it behaves, for god mode, no reloading or one-hit kills; the mod menus players use in Max Payne 3 are fan-made scripts. One trainer download site warns that a trainer usually fits one version of the game and may stop working or misbehave after an update or a language change, and that the chance of glitches or even damage to the game, at worst needing a reinstall, is especially high.
