Max Payne 1 & 2 Remake: release date, platforms and news
Remedy is rebuilding the first two games as a single new one, headed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with Rockstar Games funding and publishing it. As of September 2026 it is still in development, and nobody has named a release date.

The remake
Two games, one release
As of September 2026, Max Payne 1 & 2 Remake is one title that covers both Max Payne (2001) and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne (2003). Remedy Entertainment, the Finnish studio that made both originals, is building it under a development agreement with Rockstar Games, and it is not a touch-up: Remedy is remaking both games from scratch on Northlight, its in-house engine.
Rockstar owns the series, funds the project and will publish it. As of September 2026 Remedy’s page for the game names three platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Switch, PS4 and Xbox One are not on that list.
As of September 2026 the project is also income for Remedy: its report for the first quarter of 2026 named the remake and Control Resonant, alongside game sales, as its main sources of revenue.
Release date
No date yet
As of September 2026 there is no release date. Rockstar Games handles the publishing and every announcement about the project, so Remedy answers questions from its investors with a status line and nothing more. In the Q&A after its half-year report in August 2026, the studio’s investor relations manager said as much: publishing is Rockstar’s side.
So, as of September 2026, any date you read elsewhere is somebody’s estimate, not an announcement from either company.
Progress
From concept to full production
April 2022: Remedy announced the project, then in its concept stage. October 2023: the studio told investors it had moved into production readiness. From the second quarter of 2024 the remake has been in full production, and Remedy’s reports of August 2025, May 2026 and August 2026 still describe it that way — the state of play as of September 2026.
In February 2025 Remedy reported steady progress, and in April 2025 it said the project had advanced toward major development stages. Its report for the second quarter of 2025, covered by PlayStation Universe on August 12, 2025, called the work with Rockstar close and productive. The Q1 2026 report, out on May 5, 2026, said only that full production continued, with no other development news. The half-year report of August 11, 2026 confirmed the game is still in development — the latest word as of September 2026.
Max’s voice
Who voices Max
James McCaffrey voiced Max in all three games and gave him his face and motion capture in Max Payne 3. He died on December 17, 2023, at 65. As of September 2026, who will voice Max in the remake is not known.

Playing the originals now
As of September 2026 the Xbox store lists both Max Payne and Max Payne 2 for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, where the trilogy has been backward compatible since November 2021, and on PC all three games are on Steam. On PlayStation, the US PlayStation Store lists the first game for PS4 and notes that it also runs on PS5, where some PS4 features may be missing.

Will there be a Max Payne 4?
Not one that anyone has announced. As of September 2026 the newest game in the series is still Max Payne 3 from May 2012 — that is how Wikipedia’s series article, edited on September 16, 2026, lists it — and the only new Max Payne game on record is this remake of the first two. A Max Payne 5 has never been announced either.
Back in July 2018, SVG made the case that Rockstar had little reason to return: Max Payne 3 ends with Max on a beach with no one left to fight, and a $110 million quarterly loss at Take-Two in 2012 was put down largely to weak sales of that game and Spec Ops: The Line. Less than four years later Remedy announced the remake instead. As of September 2026, that is where the story of a new Max Payne stops.
